Research Summary

The European Social Survey is an academically-driven social science project designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The ESS was established in 2001, is a biennial multi-country survey covering over 30 nations. Sampling is based on full coverage of the eligible residential populations aged 15+; sample size is 1500-2000 in each country. The questionnaire includes two main sections, each consisting of approximately 120 items; a 'core' module which remains relatively constant from round to round, plus two 'rotating' modules, repeated at intervals.
The ESS data are harmonized and archived by the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD). The data are available from NSD free of charge and without restrictions, for not-for-profit purposes. To access data files, one has simply to register as an ESS data user.
So far, Hungary has participated in the five rounds (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010) without exception. The Hungarian data are available for the purpose of academic analysis either at national or at European comparative level. Data collection in Hungary has been carried out by the consortium of the Institute for Political Science and of the Institute for Sociological Science of the Centre for Social Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
