Research Summary

Constructions and identifications play crucial parts in understanding conflicts, their causes, unfolding and possible outcomes for the parties to the conflicts. Each party to a conflict has specific constructions of itself, of the antagonists, of the allies, of the context and the neutral players, of the relationship between the parties, of the usual ways conflicts in the locality (country etc.) unfold, of the possible outcomes (success, compromise or failure, economic, political, moral etc.) the conflict may bring. The project studies the ways conflicts between generations are perceived and constructed in Hungarian politics.
The specific research questions are the following:
1. What are the contents of the different kinds of political knowledge about generations (youth, middle aged, and elderly) in Hungary? How are the generations identified by the various political actors: politicians, media and citizens? We use texts as well as visual material to define the typical identifications.
2. What kinds of institutional procedures contribute to the political identification of generations?
3. What are the contents of the self identities of the generations? What and how much are used in self identification from the content of the constructions by political knowledge (question 1) and from the procedures (question 2)?
